McCain joins Bush in support of Affirmative Action

This story details Senator McCain's stances on a number of issues. We find that he follows the current wingnut trend of hypocritically supporting Affirmative Action:

McCain told the Star that, like Bush, he believes "all points of view" should be available to students studying the origins of mankind.

The theory of intelligent design says life is too complex to have developed through evolution, and that a higher power must have had a hand in guiding it.

More in Extended Entry.

I guess McCain missed the part where Intelligent Design isn't actually science. Scientific theories provide a mechanistic explanation for a phenomenon, not throwing your hands in the air and proclaiming "I can't explain this, so Goddidit!" If it makes no predictions, cannot be falsified, and cannot be tested, then it just doesn't count as a scientific theory. Even if ID could do these things, their experimental track record is so pathetic compared to evolution (for which literally hundreds of thousands of experiments have been performed) that one could only consider this to be another example of Neocon social promotion. "Teach all points of view", when some of the points of view are clearly of inferior quality, starts to sound suspiciously like the typical wingnut mischaracterization of Affirmative Action.

I wonder if he also supports the poorly titled Student & Faculty Academic Freedom bill, which requires "alternative viewpoints" to be taught in an effort to "balance out" the "liberal bias" among college professors? Is this a bona fide quota system in the works???? It crossed my mind that the so-called liberal bias may exist because people who get paid to think come to the conclusion that some positions embraced by so-called conservatives are intellectually bankrupt.

Remember folks, it's Evil Affirmative Action when those filthy liberals do it. If rich, white, racist, sexist, fascist theocon freaks do it, it's good science. McCain clearly has chosen to pander to that demographic in his bid for the 2008 nomination. Moderate, rational Republicans out there, the true conservatives, I implore you to stand up for reason and get your party out of the Dark Ages before we go back to leeches and bloodletting as treatments for haemophelia.

For the record, I have no beef with Affirmative Action, just the "quota system" lie that the Rush Limbaugh-types perpetuate, and the blatant hypocrisy of the theocons. Rage, rage against the lying of the Right!
